Israel Detains Gaza Flotilla Activists, Faces Outcry

An international diplomatic row is escalating after an Israeli court extended the detention of two foreign activists, Spanish national Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian national Thiago Avila. The two were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, an initiative attempting to breach Israel's long-standing blockade of Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. Israeli forces intercepted their ships in international waters earlier this week, sparking widespread condemnation.

The incident has drawn a sharp rebuke from Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who vehemently accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of "abducting foreign citizens." Sanchez demanded the immediate release of the activists, labeling their detention "a new violation of international law." The gravity of the situation is further underscored by reports from Saif's wife, Sally Issa, who stated her husband is "in shock and very sad because he missed our daughter's birthday." Both activists are reportedly on a hunger strike, protesting their detention and treatment.

Allegations of Violence and Unlawful Detention

Adding to the international pressure, Lubna Tuma, a lawyer from Adalah, an independent human rights organization representing Thiago Avila, provided a disturbing account to Al Jazeera. Tuma revealed that Abu Keshek and Avila were forcibly separated from approximately 170 other individuals aboard the flotilla. She alleged that the activists were "abducted into Israel" and subjected to severe violence, including being forced into uncomfortable positions, blindfolded throughout their ordeal, and beaten.

Tuma reported that Avila "passed out twice from all the violence" and that when he requested medical attention, he was only given painkillers. The lawyer strongly contended that Israel lacks jurisdiction over foreign civilians apprehended in international waters, thereby rendering their detention "unlawful." Adalah is demanding the immediate release of both activists, emphasizing that their actions were humanitarian and within international law. The international community watches closely as this contentious issue unfolds, raising significant questions about maritime law, human rights, and the ongoing blockade of Gaza.
