Hormuz Strait Shipping Stalls Amid Mixed Signals

Shipping through the critical Strait of Hormuz has once again ground to a halt, dashing brief hopes that Iran would reopen the vital waterway. Initial reports suggested vessels were preparing to transit after Iran indicated the route would be accessible. However, these efforts were quickly thwarted as Iranian forces issued warnings for ships to turn back, effectively re-imposing a blockade and halting all navigation.

Iran's 'Desperate' Tactics

Scott Uehlinger, a seasoned retired US Navy and former CIA officer, described Iran's strategy of using small armed speedboats as a "desperate act" with limited genuine military effectiveness. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Uehlinger elaborated that these actions serve primarily as an "insurance threat." By creating consistent uncertainty and risk, Iran deters shipping companies from transiting, thereby maintaining a de facto closure of the strait without a full naval engagement.

Economic Impact and Leadership Division

Uehlinger highlighted the significant economic toll this standoff is taking on Iran, estimating that the US sanctions regime is costing the nation an estimated $160 million per day in lost oil revenue. He also suggested that the conflicting signals emanating from Iran's foreign ministry and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) might point towards internal divisions within the country's leadership. Despite these escalating costs for Iran, Uehlinger noted that US pressure operations remain sustainable. However, he cautioned that persistent uncertainty looms, particularly in anticipation of future ceasefire decisions that could alter the geopolitical landscape.
