Lebanon Crisis: 1.2M Displaced, Hospitals Shut Amid Conflict

A severe humanitarian crisis is rapidly unfolding in Lebanon, with more than 1.2 million people, roughly a fifth of the nation’s population, forcibly displaced since March 2 due to Israel’s ongoing invasion and intense fighting with Hezbollah. Among those uprooted are an alarming 400,000 children, as highlighted by UNICEF, painting a grim picture of innocent lives caught in the crossfire.

The conflict's geographical footprint has expanded dramatically. Israeli forces have extended their control deep into Lebanese territory, reaching from the Litani River to the Zahrani River, a significant 40-kilometer push into the country. This expansion has led to the United Nations issuing evacuation orders covering approximately 14% of the population, forcing countless families to abandon their homes and livelihoods in search of safety.

Infrastructure Devastation and Aid Blockages

The relentless bombardment has severely damaged critical infrastructure, including vital roads and bridges. This widespread destruction has crippled humanitarian aid efforts, making it incredibly difficult for relief organizations to reach vulnerable populations and deliver essential supplies. The situation deteriorated further following devastating strikes on April 8, which targeted over 100 sites across southern Lebanon. These attacks resulted in hundreds of fatalities and, critically, forced the closure of six hospitals, leaving thousands without access to medical care in an already fragile healthcare system.

Adding to the dire situation, the World Food Programme (WFP) reports that 80% of southern markets are now non-functional. This catastrophic collapse of local economies and supply chains has exacerbated food insecurity, pushing more families into hunger and destitution. The combined effect of displacement, infrastructure damage, lack of medical access, and food shortages has created an unprecedented humanitarian emergency, demanding urgent international attention and intervention.

Al Jazeera’s Um-e-Kulsoom Shariff has been on the ground, providing crucial reports on the escalating crisis and the immense suffering endured by the Lebanese people. The international community is urged to act swiftly to protect civilians, facilitate humanitarian access, and work towards a lasting resolution to the conflict that has ravaged the region.
