Shocking Inquest into Duterte's Abduction Victims

Manila, Philippines – An independent body has launched hearings into killings connected to former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drugs campaign. Government figures state 6,000 people were killed under the ‘war on drugs,’ but human rights groups claim the real toll is over 30,000 extrajudicial deaths by police and vigilantes.

Witnessing a Tragic Past

The testimonies began today with Luzviminda Siapo, who recounted the harrowing story of her disabled teenage son Raymart. Nine years ago, while working in Kuwait, she witnessed his abduction and brutal killing at close range by unidentified assailants.

“I was just a mother trying to do my job,” Siapo said tearfully. “And then one day they came for him, and I never saw him again.”

A Shattered Family’s Justice Quest

Detectives from the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) have been conducting a forensic examination of Raymart's remains to determine how he met his fate. Dr. Raquel Fortun, a member of the commission, disclosed that “the pathologist found signs suggesting that Raymart was shot at close range.”

International Condemnation and Local Accountability

Traffic killings linked to Duterte's drug crackdown have been condemned by numerous international bodies, including the United Nations. Yet, local courts have struggled with accountability issues.

The 2017 murder of Kian delos Santos stands out as a rare exception; his conviction was based on CCTV footage contradicting police claims of self-defense. However, his family remains unsatisfied, as some charges were still pending at the time of sentencing.

“Justice is not just about putting someone in jail,” said Siapo. “It’s about making sure that my son’s killers are held accountable and that other families like mine can find closure.”
