Myanmar Crisis Deepens: Hormuz Tensions Hit Farmers

Myanmar's already dire humanitarian crisis is being exacerbated by shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, severely impacting the nation's agricultural sector. Farmers are grappling with exorbitant costs for essential farming inputs like fuel and fertilizer, threatening the country's food security.

Fertilizer Prices Skyrocket

Reports from farmers across Myanmar indicate a staggering fivefold increase in the price of 50-kilogram fertilizer bags since March. This price surge is directly linked to disruptions in global shipping routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for international trade. Myanmar imports approximately 90 percent of its fuel and up to 95 percent of its chemical fertilizers from the Gulf region, making it highly vulnerable to any trade impediments.

World Food Programme Sounds Alarm

The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a grave warning, projecting a potential 50 percent reduction in fertilizer use across Myanmar. This drastic decrease in application could lead to a significant 15 percent drop in the country's overall farming output. Such a decline in agricultural productivity would have devastating consequences for a nation already struggling with widespread hunger and malnutrition.

A Nation in Crisis

The current situation is a devastating blow to a country still reeling from the aftermath of the military coup in 2021. Since the coup, more than 90,000 people are estimated to have been killed, and nearly four million have been displaced from their homes. The ongoing conflict and instability have already crippled the economy and severely hampered humanitarian efforts. The added burden of soaring agricultural input costs and potential food shortages paints a grim picture for the future of Myanmar's vulnerable population.

Al Jazeera's Perry Wilton reports from Myanmar, shedding light on the human cost of these global and local crises.
