Alien Rock Duo Angine de Poitrine Goes Viral

In the bizarre and wonderful world of viral sensations, few acts have captured the internet's imagination quite like Angine de Poitrine. This Quebecois microtonal rock duo burst onto the scene this spring, quickly amassing millions of listeners with their unique sound and even more unique appearance. Sporting monochrome polka-dotted complexions and strikingly extruded faces, guitarist Khn and drummer Klek present themselves not just as musicians, but as 333-year-old time travellers, whose primary inspiration hails from a solemn musical quartet of monkeys from Borneo.

Their otherworldly aesthetic isn't just for show; it's a deeply ingrained part of their persona. Khn’s long, twangable nose and double-necked guitar/bass, coupled with Klek’s dangly proboscis bouncing to his stone-cold drumming, have become iconic. Yet, the elaborate alien-like heads that define their image are not naturally occurring. These were once meticulously crafted papier-mache masks, handmade and painstakingly maintained through months of rigorous gigging.

The intensity of their performances, however, took its toll. "When I looked at mine, I was like: Jesus Christ, did I really play that much with this?" admits Klek, reflecting on the state of his disintegrating mask. "It was falling apart. It was like putting a Christmas box outside when it’s raining." The masks, having absorbed countless breaths and exertions, had gone soggy and were literally falling to pieces, necessitating robust replacements.

Crucially, the new heads had to retain the beloved 'lived-in' quality of their predecessors. "People have fallen in love with the band as it’s always been," explains Khn. "So we’re not gonna change everything [because] we have a bigger budget now. We’re emotionally attached to our old beaten-up costumes that have been in car accidents and are full of snot." This commitment to authenticity, even down to the perceived grime and wear, is central to their appeal. They believe fans connect with the tangible history embedded in their performance attire. "We think people love the fact that you can feel they have lived," Khn concludes, perfectly encapsulating the enduring, eccentric charm of Angine de Poitrine.
