Kim Thayil: Grunge Icon's Memoir and Unfinished Soundgarden Tracks

Kim Thayil, the influential guitarist for the pioneering grunge band Soundgarden, is sharing his remarkable journey in his new memoir, "A Screaming Life." Known for his distinctive guitar riffs and his role in shaping the Seattle sound, Thayil opens up about his experiences as an outsider, even within the famously liberal city of Seattle.

An Outsider's Perspective

For over four decades, Thayil has called Seattle home but only recently embraced its ubiquitous coffee culture during the lockdown, a stark contrast to his friends who frequented coffee shops. "I was pretty against-the-grain to my Seattle friends, who always wanted to meet up at coffee shops," he shares, a cup of coffee in hand. His personal history, rooted in his Indian heritage, meant he grew up drinking tea, a habit that set him apart. "My girlfriend in the 80s and 90s even worked at the original branch of Starbucks and made coffee with a French press every morning. But I drank tea, because my parents are Indian."

Forming Soundgarden

Thayil's memoir delves into the early days of Soundgarden, formed in 1984 with bassist Hiro Yamamoto. He notes that the band was "two-thirds Asian" and that despite the punk scene's acceptance, it was still predominantly white. Thayil was always conscious of this.

From Grunge to Global Acclaim

Despite these early feelings of otherness, Soundgarden rose to become a cornerstone of the grunge movement. They achieved multiplatinum success, critical acclaim, and a Grammy Award. Their breakthrough hit, "Black Hole Sun," transcended the typical grunge sound to become an iconic and enduring anthem, a testament to the band's unique artistry.

Unfinished Business

Beyond his memoir, Thayil reveals that he has been working on completing nine unfinished Soundgarden songs, offering a glimpse into the band's unreleased material and a potential new chapter for their legacy.
